Lee Biing-jye, chairman at Taiwan-based LED chipmaker Epistar, forecasts that lights based on light-emitting diodes would become a leading light source in the general lighting market, only when their retail price reaches a level of US$5 for 1,000 lumens.
According to prior predictions of the US Department of Energy, the specified retail price can appear in 2012, but Lee states that the manufacturer would offer the mentioned products at US$10 in 2012.
To offer the price of US$5, the producers should to reduce their shipments to US$3. It should be mentioned that the current price makes approximately US$30-40 for 400 lumens.
LED products are becoming more and more popular but they are planned to earn only US$1.9 billion in 2010, what makes about 2% of the worldwide illumination market.
