New 2010 to Be Marked as a New Start for Energy Efficient Light Sources in the European Union

17 February 2010 - 10:00

Numerous residents of the United States met the New Year under the glowing LED ball in Times Square, while people of the European Union celebrated start of the New Year understanding that incandescent bulbs belong to yesteryear from that moment. In October, 2009, the council of the European Union made a decision tp ban filament bulbs. The decision takes effect from the very beginning of 2010.
But LEDs are forecast not to be used everywhere despite the mentioned ban. In the EU residential lighting market, energy and cost efficient compact fluorescent lamps are to take a position of the leader, according to predictions from ecogeek.org.
Though light-emitting diodes are undisputed leader in power efficiency, their cost is still their disadvantage. But with CFLs, the EU is planned to reduce the overall power consumption by 60%, what would help to cut CO2 emissions by 30 million tons (out of the 4 billion tons produced by the European Union each year).
The same trend is to take place in the USA too. An idea to switch to energy efficient light bulbs can be found among Americans’ top 10 eco-friendly resolutions for 2010.
