Next-gen iPad could have OLED screen

22 June 2010 - 10:00
Rumours suggesting that the next iteration of Apple’s iPad will have an OLed (organic light-emitting diode) screen have surfaced online

According to a report in Digitimes, “sources in the component industry” have confirmed these reports.

Oled screens offer better efficiency than other types of LCD (liquid crystal display) so could help extend battery life of the device.

The iPad, which launched in the US over the Easter weekend but has had its international launch date pushed back until the end of May, does run its battery down quickly, though Apple states that it is good for 10 hours of surfing on Wi-Fi networks.

An OLED screen would definitely extend the battery performance, though is also likely to significantly increase production costs.

In the UK the iPad will be available to pre-order from 10 May. UK pricing has still not been set.
